Description

Peter Freeman, Inc.

Peter Freeman, Inc. was founded in 1990 and specializes in important paintings, sculptures, and drawings of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a particular emphasis on early Pop and Minimal works. The gallery is also deeply involved with contemporary art, representing artists including Mel Bochner, Catherine Murphy, Thomas Schütte and Franz Erhard Walther, as well as several important estates including Mangelos and Charlotte Posenenske. We present at least five exhibitions each year of both new work and of historical bodies of work by major artists. Since the founding of the gallery Peter Freeman, Inc. has always made exhibitions of historical material especially relevant to the art of our time. The exhibitions are focused shows, exploring significant movements, themes and ideas that have influenced and defined recent culture. These have included solo exhibitions of the work of James Ensor (1860 - 1949) and Medardo Rosso (1858 - 1928), both artists in which we specialize. The historic works handled by the gallery over the past thirty years are broad ranging and can often be defined by their rarity and significance. For this reason, much of our business has been with museums. Peter Freeman also publishes scholarly books, including a catalogue raisonné Robert Mangold: Early Works, with text by Robert Storr; the first US catalogue on the works of Charlotte Posnenske; Medardo Rosso with an essay by Sharon Hecker; James Ensor: Paintings, with text by Xavier Tricot; and the artists book Tide, a collaboration with Silvia Bächli and Jamaica Kincaid. The gallery is a member of the Art Dealers Association of America.
